I red FORTUNE magazine a couple days ago, and what was fascinating me much is a profile of Indra Nooyi.

Why?

First of all, she is a woman, run a big company –PEPSI CO- and the sales goes up under her leadership, and she has Indian background –same as me. It might be because of her background, her business steps are based on how this business could and continuously good for all.

She is supported by her family, especially by her mother and husband. Her mother raised her to be a dreamer a long with rational thinking. You can help the country as long as you make sure your home fires burning, was what her mother says to little Indra. Her great husband is beside her when she decides to pursue her dream.

Grow up in the similar patriarchy society, here in Indonesia, sometimes woman feel afraid to run over my dreams. Woman afraid that, nobody wants her become his wife, then she could not have her own family. Sometimes it worsens by the question, “… So, when will you get marry?”.

Indra Nooyi is one example of successful career woman without put less attention to her family. If she can, why can’t we?

RD Asia December edition is a worth to collect indeed! Why? Well, I found another good article. Now it’s about making decision.

For some of us making decision is a hard working. I eventually find myself spend my thoughts on: What’s the better? What should I choose? OMG.. it’s killing me.. tell me what to do!

Summarized from “10 Ways to Make Better Decisions”, I hope to whom who does in the mind battle, get an answer. (You can log on to http://rdasia.com to read the complete article, or take a test to analyze your decision skill)

1. CONSEQUENCES

Most of us are avoiding the consequences that may hurt us. When the consequences really come, surprisingly, it might not as bad as we think before. Well, the sun still shine, birds still sing… the world is as beautiful as it is.

A good suggestion come out from the book: find someone who was in the position, and see how they felt. MAYBE, it is a good choice for you too!

2. INSTINCT

A study results instinctive choices could get you become happier. It could be applied on simple decision as “What shoes should I buy?” or a way beyond to businesses and politics. If you feel doubtful, leave it. Your heart knows the truth.

3. EMOTIONS

For sure. Elderly said don’t make decisions under emotions. Which I think: anger. Anger indeed –from many personal experiences- made a mess. Interestingly, sadness make you think a way longer to consider another preferences. MAYBE because you feel that you can’t bear the loss again?

4. BIAS

Well, well, well… I found it’s very me. During the process of made up my mind, usually I get defensive for my choices. I tend to find facts and figures to back up my preferable selection, and it turns to bias.

For this, I got a good suggestion from a friend of mine. Ade-his name- said that.. “We better think the bad side of our choices before we decide. At least when we back to the choices, we’ve prepared that they come with risks and consequences.”

5. FOCUS

Ups.. another weakness of mine. And *cheering* another idea from my best friend –Rod-. First steps moving of our way are always harder. It’s dark, scary, and unfamiliar. (OK, I was too much on this). However, try to keep focus on what you’re going to. Rod said, “Focus, and set a standard! You will be fine”. <– The last sentence is as worth as magic spell! Repeat it as much as you need when you feeling low.

6. SOCIAL PRESSURE

A simple hint: don’t think what other people might think about you. As we grew up on different values and those affect our preferences of life. However social values could prevent us from regretful result. Hmm.. MAYBE the hint should be changed: think what God may think about you. <– Again: your heart knows the best!

7. TAKE A DIFFERENT ANGLE

How to do it? By walk slower. As I red from La Tahzan, when a car has to pass a narrow road, it has to be ridden slower and carefully. Same as we are, by patient and at the same time enjoying it, we will look our problems objectively, then it take us to good decision to choose.

8. PAST IS THE PAST

OK, it is hard to say the sentence because I am a person from the past. *take a deep breath* Yes, We’ve made some silly, regretful, decisions. Yet, we don’t want to live in this kind of life forever don’t we? I don’t want to… :-P

9. SIMPLIFY

Are you a maximisers -who examine all options before making judgment-, or satisficers –who tend to choose the first option which meets your requirements. In my opinion, life is much easier if you are satisficers. If you fail, well, qui sera sera, at least you didn’t spend a lot of time to think about it anyway.

10. HAVE SOMEONE TO CHOOSE

Another surprising fact: we tend to believe that we’ll be happier making our own decisions. Yet, no matter the outcome the process of making a decision can sometimes leave us feeling dissatisfied (p.96).

OK. That is very Indonesian: whether happy or sorrow we’ll have it together (susah senang dipikul bareng). I guess everybody familiar with this. :-)

Ufh..! *feeling glad* Finally the decision have taken! New way has to be walked on. And the best sentences to close this post is a part of lyrics taken from “Every heart “ by BOA:

On and on the time goes on but we are not alone We live together and we will find some precious things Sometime we will smile sometime we will cry Don't forget believing yourself: that tomorrow is another chance*   *it might different on translation, gomenasai :-P

Visit Indonesia 2008

Yang kedua, It’s December already!
